History & Legends

From any point you look at the Garda basin history emerges sovereign. The name of the largest lake in Italy comes from a German avant-garde that settled in the area of today’s village of Garda shortly after 300 B.C. Over time ,those outposts have given way to castles, ancient customs and medieval villages, more modern forts and stately villas, churches and small basilicas.

History is a discreet and refined protagonist of the territory of Lake Garda, just as only whispered are the legends of love, travelers, monsters, of lovers, soldiers and adventurers who over the centuries have been driven by the morning mists almost imperceptible to the ears of those who listen. Walking along the shores of Lake Garda means retracing the steps that from prehistoric times to the Second World War guided its people through the Roman, Venetian, Scaliger and Visconti dominations. A land that surprised Goethe in his trip to Italy, made Catullus fall in love and decant Virgil, hosted Dante and inspired the poetics of D'Annunzio.
